It was tough work tasting 10 wines at our Cracking Christmas Wines Workshop earlier this week but we made it!
Whilst selecting this shortlist I’d tasted and seen many more – originally planning to present just 7 wines but the temptation to include others was just too great. Everyone was asked to score the wines out of 10 and whether they would purchase the wines over the festive season.
The wines were well received and here are the results in order of how they scored. It seemed all the wines were going to be on someone’s Christmas table this year with over 70% of people confirming they were going to buy those highlighted in green.
It was a fun evening, and as Tara who attended kindly wrote “Many excellent value wines! Well chosen”

I had a funny incident with the Pilliterri Ice Wine when my husband saw a bottle sitting on my desk. He was horrified and asked what I was doing with his wine which he’d got from Charlie Pilliterri and how dare I think it was going into one of my tastings! Turns out he knows Pilliterri CEO Charlie well through the (whisky) trade. I was then e-introduced to Charlie who told me plenty more about his business. He also sent through this video about the making of ice wine. As they say, it’s incredible, given the brutality of the conditions to produce this wine; -8 degrees Celsius temperatures, trying to crush tough, frozen grapes that the resulting wine is so delicate and fabulous. It’s pure nectar as several commented this week. The stockist of this true gem is none other than Lidl who has also done extremely well to be offering it to us at £9.99 when it sells in Canada for over $50 (£30). Get it whilst you can as it’s not going to last long!
Aside from these wines there are numerous other offers available – Waitrose are offering 25% off numerous wines and have knocked many of their classics back to £9.99. A popular move which is also gaining plenty of press.
The red version of the Columbia Winery Chardonnay is also on special offer at Oddbins at £12.50 and well worth trying – it’s a wonderfully smooth Merlot – bursting with fruit, complex and elegant. Their Milkwood Shiraz Viognier which I showed at last year’s festive wine workshop is still great value at £8.50 and their best selling wine under £10. Plenty of fruit and elegant soft tannins – delicious on its own too.
The Original Bier Company at Canonmills is well worth a visit – recently opened, they’re specialists in craft German beer and have some superb German gin too amongst their growing collection of German wines. They represent many small producers in Germany and most of their beers and wines are organic, bio dynamic and vegan too.
If you’re looking for further recommendations please keep an eye out on the Facebook page where I’ll be posting plenty of other hot offers over the coming week.
Wishing you all a very Merry Christmas and a Sparkling 2019. Don’t forget we’re holding our first Whisky Workshop during Burns Week on Monday 21 January Find out more
