In the run up to Fizz Feast we have a series of Fizz Feast Taster blogs each focusing on one of our fabulous exhibitors, to give you a flavour of the treats in store on Saturday 17 November.
Vilarnau is a small, artisanal and cutting-edge winery based just outside Barcelona. Historically the Vilarnau family were members of the Spanish aristocracy who settled in the region back in the 12th Century. However, it wasn’t until 1949 that the first Cava was produced bearing the Vilarnau name. Since then Vilarnau has gone from strength to strength, becoming one of the most highly respected Cavas available today.
Cava is renowned for offering outstanding value for money. Made in the traditional painstaking bottle fermented method, one would certainly expect it to be priced more highly. The grapes used are traditionally Macabeu, Parellada and Xarel·lo. However, since 1981 Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, the traditional grapes used in Champagne have started to be used which bring more elegance and finesse.
Not surprisingly, to achieve the fresh and sophisticated style Vilarnau Cavas are predominantly Chardonnay and Pinot Noir but also include the traditional Macabeo and Xarel·lo. The wines are aged for a minimum of 15 months in the bottle thus creating added finesse and depth to the flavour.
Vilarnau is also known for pioneering work in sustainability. Respecting the land and environment where the vines grow, the company has a rigorous water management, waste reduction and sustainable viticulture programme in place. Vilarnau Cava is also certified organic.
The uber-cool bottle design is inspired by “Trencadis”. This is a kind of mosaic created by the famous artist Antoni Gaudí which is hugely popular in Barcelona. It’s created from tiny fragments of broken ceramic tiles, roof tiles or crockery. Since Vilarnau is so close Barcelona, both geographically and spiritually it was a natural inspiration for the wines. The design is quite unique; contemporary, elegant, minimalist and just like the Cava itself, unforgettable!
Come and taste the wines for yourself at Fizz Feast. Don’t forget Hamish Breden is presenting an exciting masterclass to take you on a discovery tour of the world of Cava whilst you taste through this award winning range of fizz. It will leave you in no doubt as to why Vilarnau Cava is without a doubt the coolest fizz to enjoy.
